With the rise of TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, the power to get eyes on your business lies right at your fingertips. But, with the rise in popularity of social media, also comes a rise in competition.
In this article we’ll break down and explain what social media truly is, how it works, and how your business can capture the attention of the world.
At its core, social media consists of multiple platforms which allow users to create and share content, interact with others users, and build communities around shared interests. From casual posts on Instagram to professional networking on LinkedIn, these platforms have reshaped how people connect and communicate.
Compared to the past where businesses, to reach an audience, would need traditional marketing platforms like radio and television, now have a direct line to their audience, bypassing traditional advertising methods and opening up avenues for creative storytelling, engagement, and growth.
Social media meets people where they are. As of 2024, billions of users actively scroll through social media daily, searching for entertainment, news, and connection. More than 24% of the world’s population takes public transport, think about the last time you took public transport.
If you look at everyone around you, you’ll notice that almost everyone is on their phones. Whether they are listening to music, scrolling through TikTok or watching a YouTube video, they are consuming content. This vast digital crowd is a goldmine of opportunity for businesses.
Whether you’re a small local shop or a global corporation, social media levels the playing field, enabling you to reach your ideal audience regardless of your budget or size.
To succeed on social media platforms, it’s important to understand how it works. At its heart are algorithms, automated systems that decide which content appears in users’ feeds. These algorithms prioritize engagement, showing posts that are likely to generate likes, comments, shares, clicks and high retention.
But as Mr Beast, the most subscribed YouTuber in the world as of 2024, once said “Anytime you say the word algorithm, just replace it with audience”.
The beginning of a social media account is always the hardest. As the platforms will show your content to a small group of viewers, if that results in a high engagement or viewer retention then it will send it out to a wider audience, and from there a wider audience, and so on. So, the more engaging your content is to an audience, the more likely it will be seen by a broader audience.
Each platform does have its own type of audience and features. For instance:
Instagram focuses on visually appealing and entertaining content like photos, Reels, and Stories. Its audience skews younger and creative, making it ideal for brands in fashion, lifestyle, and arts.
TikTok is dominated by short, engaging videos. It thrives on its trending FYP page, humor, and casual authenticity. It’s particularly effective for businesses targeting Gen Z and younger Millennials.
A platform that grew through its longer, in-depth video content, YouTube is perfect for tutorials, product reviews, and storytelling. But with the addition of YouTube shorts in 2020, YouTube brought its long form audience to the scrolling world thus, it appeals to users seeking entertainment and information.
Facebook focuses on building community, running targeted ads, and sharing a mix of content types(updates, photos, videos, livestreams, events). With their robust advertising tools, it’s ideal for businesses looking to drive website traffic and promote their offerings.
LinkedIn is the leading platform for professionals, and for a good reason. Utilized for B2B marketing and career networking, you’ll see content like: industry insights, thought leadership content, and job postings.
For businesses targeting other professionals/businesses or looking to build their industry authority, LinkedIn is a must.
Twitter is known for real-time updates and short messaging. It’s perfect for engaging in conversations, sharing news, and building brand personality.
It’s been an effective platform for many businesses looking to foster connections with customers, staying on top of trending topics, or showcasing more playful and conversational tone.
A business known for their playful content on X is the Mexican restaurant chain, Chipotle. While being a large restaurant franchise, Chipotle is very responsive to its customers' tweets and known for their witty replies.
Pinterest is a visual discovery platform where users go for inspiration and ideas. For businesses in the niches of home decor, fashion, beauty, food, weddings, and others alike, they can utilize it to create visually compelling content, or pins, with the goal to drive traffic to their website.
For example, I’m looking for an art piece in my living room and want it to fit my beachy and “Cape Cod” style. I can go to Pinterest and search "coastal cottage living rooms”, where I’ll be met with thousands of pictures, furniture, and art prints. I see a beautiful white sea shell framed art piece. Lucky enough, it’s a pin from the store Etsy, where I can click the link and buy immediately!
Success on social media requires creating tailored content that resonates with your target audience and aligns with the platform’s strengths. Consistency, creativity, and staying up-to-date with platform trends are essential to maintaining visibility and capturing attention.
As we mentioned above, Social Media is the modern form of television which has 2 main forms of content; marketing and entertainment.
