We all know that Y2K style has formed a major comeback on the fashion scene. With artists like Charli XCX, influencers like Addison Rae and designers like Nicola Brognano establishing the build-up to the resurgence, Y2K style is back in full swing.

But did you know that Y2K style is also trending in the digital art scene? From cotton-candy colorways to futuristic fonts, the early 2000s graphic design is back and better than ever, with far better advancement in the graphic design scene than artists had in 2005.

If you’re a graphic, web, or UX designer, be ready to take notes! We’re taking it back to the 2000s to create some hot designs.

What is Y2K Style?

While Y2k style  can simply be summed up through deep colorways, distressed textures, low-rise cuts, and bejewelled beading, it takes a variety of shapes through sub-genres.

Rappers like Ice Spice and Saweetie have shown off “McBling” fashion, rocking tailored all-denim, bubble-gum pink, velour tracksuits, and metallic, futuristic tech ensembles.

Singer, Tyla, has sported asymmetrical mini-skirt sets, distressed natural leathers and fabrics with bold animal print, mixing “Gen-X Soft Club” style with her South African heritage. And the hyper-pop superstar, Charli XCX, has often emulated “Cyber Grunge,” donning utilitarian-style garments like cargos, pale green and blue colorways, futuristic accessories, and mesh.

Dig out those floral sundresses, low-cut jeans, and baby tees out – because they’re back in.

Why Now?

Alongside his colorful counterpart, the 80s, the early 2000s celebrated fun, youthfulness, and the start of a millennium. With the current generation coming out of the pandemic, facing an unstable economy, the stressors of social media, and so on, it is likely that Gen-Zers are craving some brightness in their lives. And if partying to some to hyper pop, wearing bedazzled low-rise jeans, and snapping some digital photos with their friends is a way to escape the tensions of life, so be it.

Y2K in Digital Art

Of course, Y2K fashion has become prevalent to most. But if you weren’t paying attention to the digital art scene, graphic and web designers alike have too been taking it back to 2005.

With social media taking visual aesthetic trends full circle, from fashion, to film, to art, designers have caught on. Scroll through Instagram today and you’ll probably see more than a couple of posts made with pastel colors, pixelated graphics, and narrow, html webpages echoing the MySpace era.

So designers, want to learn how to incorporate some early 2000s style into your graphics, branding, web and app design? Here’s your modern-day guide to Y2K-coded digital design.

Key Stylistic Elements

Typography:

Typography played a massive role in 2000s graphic design, bringing futuristic edge to album covers, film trailers, and the likes. Think ultra-modern, pixelated fonts that could have appeared on the cover of Blade Runner, or sans-serif fonts from Friendster, MySpace, or LiveJournal.

Color Palettes:

Depending on the emotion of the project at hand, and the sub-genre of the artist, 2000s color palettes ranged from the muted, earthy tones of the Gen-X Soft Club, to the vibrant pastels of McBling, and the cool-toned color scheme of Cyber Grunge. Here are some colors you can use to play of these styles.

Graphics

When designing graphics, take inspiration from the retro-tech digital art during the early 2000s.

  • Metallic iconography and artwork
  • High-gloss backgrounds
  • Thick and shiny wording and logos
  • The addition of Y2K era tech accessories, such as bulky computers, flip phones, and wired headphones
  • Pixelated gradients
