Building a website that is effective and conversion-friendly can be a challenging task, but it is important to take into account what data is telling us in order to design a successful site. By understanding how users interact with your site, you can make adjustments that will result in a better user experience and hopefully more conversions. Here are some tips and a real-life case study on how to use data to improve your website design.

Start with a strong foundation

When it comes to crafting a well designed website, starting with solidified branding and values is key. A website should be rooted in your company’s mission and goals, conveying the feeling of unity to visitors. This will create an authentic experience that resonates with customers. Quality design involves making sure that your imagery, colors, fonts, logo, layout, and content aligns with what you want your business to represent. Taking the time to thoughtfully plan out your website’s foundation can make all the difference in communicating professionalism and success to your potential customers.

Use data to guide your decisions

Data is often overlooked as a powerful source of information; tracking how users interact with your site can provide a treasure trove of insight into how to improve the overall user experience. Taking the time to analyze user data can help you identify what features are well received, which areas need improvement and where further development is needed. By incorporating user data into your decision-making process, you can ensure that the products, services and content best serve the needs of your customers. While data should not be used in isolation as it only forms part of the foundation for any decisions that are made, using data helps create an informed platform on which more effective decisions can be based.

Case Study: Using Hotjar Analytics to Improve Online Lead Conversion

Our team was was tasked with helping Company ABC increase online lead conversions for its regional gym business.

The Problem: Company ABC’s Online Signups were Declining

Despite adding CTAs, or calls to action, on their homepage, Company ABC was failing to drive online signups for their gym membership trials. This represented an important goal for their growing business, as they believed memberships would increase if prospective customers were offered a chance to try their facilities before committing.

Diagnosing the Problem

We conducted user testing using Hotjar’s heatmaps feature to gain insight into how users interacted with their site. This enabled us to identify areas of improvement, such as which buttons weren’t visible or weren’t being clicked. We found that users had trouble finding the signup button due to its size, placement and color. We identified that the signup buttons–which were placed just below the fold of the average mobile device–were not being seen by nearly 40% of their online audience.

Implementing a Solution

To fix the problem, we developed a new strategy that incorporated design elements that would make it easier for visitors to find and click on the signup button. We paid special attention to the display of the mobile button placement, as over 90% of Company ABC’s new user traffic accessed the site on a mobile device.

We also implemented A/B testing to determine which call-to-action buttons and alignments performed better in terms of conversions. We tested different variations of color, size, shape, and wording in order to identify what worked best for our clients’ target audience. Through this process, we identified which button designs drove more clicks and signups.

In addition, we employed Hotjar’s session recordings feature to observe how visitors navigated around their website. This allowed us to pinpoint potential problems with navigation flow and page layout.

The Results

Through our comprehensive analysis of user behavior data, we were able to develop an effective strategy for improving online lead conversion rates for Company ABC’s gym business. As a result of our efforts, Company ABC saw an increase in monthly signups within just a few weeks after implementing our recommendations and design changes!

Keep it simple

When it comes to web design and development, the simplest solutions are often the best. A website that is minimalistic and straightforward can be both user-friendly and visually appealing. By avoiding the excess of visuals, design elements, content, or plugins that can distract users from your message or product offering, a website can become easier to navigate without compromising style. Keeping a website uncluttered with too many bells and whistles also helps to ensure pages load quickly and reduces the chances of technical difficulties occurring for visitors. If done correctly, focusing on simplicity on any website can help increase engagement with visitors overall.

Be responsive

Keeping a website optimized for all devices is an essential part of creating an effective digital presence. By making sure your site looks great on both larger desktop computers, as well as smaller smartphones and tablets, you can ensure that you are providing visitors with an engaging user experience no matter which device they use to access it. Responsive web design provides a tailor-made look for different devices, and also makes it easier for users to navigate across any type of device without compromising the quality of their experience. Taking the time to make sure your website is responsive puts you one step ahead in creating a digital environment that your audience will appreciate.
